How to Perfect your Photo Editing Process

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

What is photo editing?

Photo editing: The color or exposure adjustments of an image to help enhance the original photo. Editing is a process that has become very popular in the age of social media. But how do you edit photos? When I first picked up photography I had the exact same question. Is there a universal way to edit photos? Or does everyone have a different editing style?

Where do I begin?

There really is no wrong or right way to edit your photos. However, every photo is different and requires different editing needs. In this article, I am going to show you how to use the photo editing feature on your iPhone to edit photos.

The nice thing about Photos is that you don’t have to download anything or purchase anything because it is already on your phone! If you have an iPhone, then you have photos! If you can’t find it, here is what the app looks like!

Once you open the app you will want to select the photo you would like to edit. In the top right corner of the photo you have selected, will be the “Edit” button. After that, you are officially in photo editing mode!

Step 1: Cropping

Now that you are ready to edit your photo, the first step is to crop your photo. You can do this by only including the most important parts of your image. For example, if your photo includes a lot of sky or grass on the top, bottom or side of the image, feel free to crop it so there isn’t as much.

Step 2: How do different features affect your photo?

The next step is to understand how each feature affects your image. Here are just a few of the features that you can use to edit your photos and what they do.

Exposure: Exposure is how bright or dark your image is. If your photo is too bright, you should decrease the exposure. If your photo is too bright, you should decrease the exposure. and/or brightness. If your photo is too dark, increase the exposure. and/or brightness. Even though you can adjust your exposure in the editing process, you should not rely on it. You will want to make sure that you have the proper exposure when you are taking the picture as opposed to waiting until the editing process. Here is an example of what I mean by this.

The first photo is the photo I took on my camera. It is already an overexposed picture. The next picture shows how I tried to turn down the exposure. As you can see, it doesn’t fix the overexposure of the original picture, it only darkens the image a little. This is why getting the right exposure is so important on your camera.

Brightness: Brightness is very similar to exposure in that they both brighten your image. However, brightness effects all tones equally, where as exposure tends to effect the highlights more than the shadows.

Highlights: Highlights can be used to edit the brightest parts of your image.

Shadows: Shadows are used to edit the darkest parts or your image.

Contrast: Contrast allows you to increase the difference between the lightest lights and the darkest darks of your image.

Saturation: Saturation controls the overall intensity of the colors in an image.

Vibrance: Vibrance saturates the parts of an image that are less colorful.

Knowing this information, you should be able to edit your photos to fit your specific style and aesthetic. There really isn’t a right or wrong way to edit photos, it’s just your preference.
